I am taking levothyroxine for hypothyroidism. Does taking supplements such as Acai berry interact with the med?

acai berry
SB asked:

Will the detoxification effects of acai berry supplements effect my medications? That is, will they remove the synthetic horomones from my system as a side effect? I am also taking birth control pills, do they effect those hormones also?

Acai doesn’t have a very large level of detoxifying properties… not more than most fruits and veggies. That being said, your best (and safest) bet would be to ask a pharmacist if there are any interactions listed between the drugs and supplements you’re taking. Doctors and pharmacists both have access to a database of drug and supplement interactions and they can tell you quickly if you can safely take them together or not…. anyone here will just have a best guess from searching on the internet (which isn’t always accurate, as we all know) ;-) Good luck!

Your body can’t tell the difference between synthetic and “natural” thyroxine…the molecule is identical
Humans eat a wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables with varying levels of anti-oxidants all the time. Acai berries aren’t anything special, they are just a fad really.
Detoxification is a myth, and has nothing to do with whatever (mild) antioxidant properties acai berries may have.
There is no interaction between your OCP and your thyroid medication either according to my Epocrates drug interaction program. It doesn’t even list acai berries, so I couldn’t specifically run that.

I wouldn’t think that it would have any more effects on interactions than eating any other berry, however you should always ask your doctor about stuff like this.

acai is a fruit..what is in the one you are taking that would make you think it is not safe.. consuming acai is like consuming apples or oranges. If you are going to consume acai it should be in juice form or as a wholefood(freeze dried powder form in most cases). If you are looking to detox your body you need to get herbs that do that. Taking meds filled with chemicals kind of defeats the purpose.

I would consult a physician about this and not take amateur advice on the internet. I an tell you that acai is just a fruit, however, if you are taking an acai pill/supplement, there might be other ingredients that could interfere with levothyroxine. Again ask a doctor.

My preferred source of Acai is Acai Berry Blast, which you can get a free trial at the site below.

    Hi,
If you have any questions you should check with your doctor first. As far as birth control It will not effect what you are taking. It is not a drug. The product that I take is 100% organic, Certified by the top certification in the USA. It is a juice blend that is high in anti oxidants, they fight the free radicals in your system. It is equivalent to 13 servings of fruits and veggies a day. if you can eat fruits and veggies with your meds. you should be fine But don’t take my word for it , go to your doctor first. You should make shure the products you take are pure with no other additives in them. If you want to help your system out then don’t put more chemicals in it.You can go to the site that i use and check it out for your self, if you want more info. Good Luck. I hope this helps.
